Mushrooming in NSW State forests
Mushrooming is a popular activity in State forests. However be warned that NSW Health does not recommend picking and eating any wild mushrooms as some species can cause poisoning. This includes liver or kidney failure.
If you do go mushroom picking in a State forest, remember:
- be sure to correctly identify your mushrooms before picking them
- don't mix mushrooms together when collecting, as poisonous mushrooms will contaminate edible ones
- if you become unwell after eating wild mushrooms call the Poisons Centre on 13 11 26
If you are in any doubt about the mushroom you have picked, throw it out - it's better to be safe.
You don't require a permit if the mushrooms are for personal use, but if you are selling mushrooms or organising a commercial foraging, picnicking or cooking event you will need a permit.
