-
On Valentine’s Day 1916, soldiers from a number of training camps in the Liverpool area rioted in protest at their conditions. After months of unrest, tempers boiled over as some 3,000 soldiers decided to strike. After fuelling their anger in local pubs, they swarmed onto trains at Liverpool Station, bound for Sydney’s CBD.

Although short-lived, the riots caused widespread damage and contributed to the death of a recruit and the injury of others. The incident also led to the introduction of 6pm closing in New South Wales hotels, a law which lasted for almost 40 years.

-
On 12 February 1965, a group of University of Sydney students hired a bus, hung a banner across the side and set off on a 2-week bus trip across NSW. Led by Indigenous rights activist Charles Perkins – who went on to become the first Indigenous man to graduate from an Australian University – the Freedom Ride was instrumental in raising awareness of racial injustice and building momentum for reconciliation action in Australia.

The widely-publicised Ride contributed significantly to changes in Australians’ attitudes towards Aboriginal rights. Subsequently, in 1967, more than 90% of Australians voted ‘Yes’ in a landmark referendum that gave Indigenous Australians full rights as citizens.

-
Duke Kahanamoku was a champion Hawaiian swimmer and surfer. His dazzling demonstrations of wave-riding techniques at Freshwater and Dee Why Beaches in the Summer of 1914/15 are credited with popularising the sport of surfing in Australia. An Olympic gold medallist swimmer, Duke was invited to Sydney to give swimming demonstrations, then persuaded to add a surfing display. On 24 December 1914, with onlookers lining the Freshwater sands, Duke paddled out into the waves and caused a sensation with a magnificent display of surfing prowess. His exhibition of skill and grace inspired many locals to take up surfing and helped the sport become what it is today.
