Famed for his lectures on geology and metals, he brought educational opportunity to the regional city more famous for gold mining. He is closely connected to the history of technical education and training in Bathurst</p><p>His youngest son William Ian Clunies Ross followed his father into a career in science. Starting in veterinary science, he turned his innovative research into parasitology into the eventual role of Chair of what would become the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).</p>

- <p>Elizabeth Jane (‘Bessie’) Robinson was a businesswoman who drove the development of the central west town of Canowindra and advocated for quality public education.</p><p>Bessie’s land stretched from present-day Gaskill Street to Clyburn Street. The Old Vic Inn now stands on the site of The Victoria Hotel built on Bessie’s land, which she ran from 1868 until the early 1900s.</p><p>In the early 1870s Bessie began campaigning for better education in Canowindra, following which, in 1875, the government agreed to set up a state school. Bessie was also instrumental in building modern-day Canowindra, developing her land for residential and commercial purposes.</p>

- <p>Louisa Lawson was a significant figure within the feminist, suffrage and Labor union movements. As publisher and writer for <em>Dawn – A Journal for Australian Women, </em>she was dedicated to writing about women’s issues. Louisa is credited as the originator of the suffrage movement in the state, once described as ‘The Mother of Suffrage in New South Wales'.</p><p>She was an independent and resourceful intellectual who is today celebrated for campaigning for women’s right to vote. Louisa was a single mother to her son, Henry.</p>

- <p>Ida Leeson was a multifaceted and interesting figure. In 1932, she was appointed Mitchell Librarian at the State Library of NSW – at a time when men dominated prestigious management positions in Australia. In 1944, Ida enlisted in the Australian Military Forces, eventually being promoted to major. She was also active in the union and women’s rights movements, and connected to the literary and artistic communities of the day.</p>
