A new bridge has been installed in Flat Rock State Forest to improve access for local residents, visitors and fire authorities, north of Batemans Bay.

Forestry Corporation has replaced a deteriorated log bridge on Three Falls Road near Milton with a new timber structure ensuring safe and reliable forest access.

The bridge replacement forms part of ongoing investment in essential State Forest infrastructure across the region with works being carried out ahead of the bushfire season.  

Forestry Corporation Operations Coordinator Andrew Condie:

“The existing log bridge had deteriorated over time and started to fail so we replaced it with a  
12-metre span ironbark bridge to maintain safe and reliable access into this part of Flat Rock State Forest,” Mr Condie said.

“The bridge provides continued access for local residents and visitors while supporting the long-term management of the forest.

"The timber for this bridge project was sustainably sourced from nearby State Forest harvest operations using ironbark a durable species used in construction that stands the test of time,” he said.

Forestry Corporation Fire and Operations Team Leader Peter Carstairs: 

“Approaching the fire season its critical there is reliable access for fire response and the community,” Mr Carstairs said.

“The bridge sits at the interface between the State forest and neighbouring private properties, making it an important route for landholders and firefighting crews.

“The new structure can accommodate fire tankers, heavy machinery and emergency response vehicles, ensuring crews can access the area quickly and safely when needed,” he said.

As one of NSW's four firefighting authorities, Forestry Corporation maintains a highly trained firefighting workforce with more than 500 firefighters on staff across NSW and more than 70 firefighters based between Batemans Bay and Eden.

The bridge project is part of a larger program of works undertaken by Forestry Corporation, which is improving access to Yadboro State Forest and the popular Yadboro Flat campground.

Gravel has been laid on Yadboro Road where low-lying clay sections had become difficult to access in wet weather and new piping has been installed along Clyde Ridge Road to improve drainage.

A bridge replacement project is also currently being planned at Boyne Creek in early 2027.
