A Solid Fuel Fire Ban will come into force in State forests across the Eurobodalla on the NSW South Coast from Friday, September 25 and remain in place throughout the school holiday period as dry conditions continue to elevate bushfire risk.

The ban means campfires and barbecues using wood, charcoal and other solid fuels are not permitted in State forests.

Gas barbecues and similar gas appliances may still be used unless a Total Fire Ban is declared by the NSW Rural Fire Service.

Solid Fuel Fire Bans are applied during periods of high fire danger to help protect forests, visitors and local communities from bushfire.

Forestry Corporation crews, alongside other firefighting agencies, have already responded to multiple major bushfire incidents across NSW this season with around 50 fires burning statewide this week.

Forestry Corporation Fire and Operations Team Leader Peter Carstairs:

“Conditions across the Eurobodalla have continued to dry out and we have seen a number of bushfire ignitions already this spring caused by escaped campfires,” Mr Carstairs said.

“With warmer weather arriving and forest fuel loads becoming increasingly dry, we are taking a precautionary approach to reduce the risk of preventable bushfires.

“Campfires are a valued part of the camping experience, but bushfire risk is real and many fires have started accidentally from campfires that were not properly managed or extinguished. We ask visitors to support this temporary ban and help us protect local forests and communities.”

While visitors will not be able to use wood-fuelled campfires during the school holidays, they can still enjoy everything State forests have to offer, including camping, walking, mountain biking, fishing and nature-based recreation.

Visitors are encouraged to check forest notices and closures before travelling and stay informed about fire conditions throughout the holiday period.

During Solid Fuel Fire Bans, only gas appliances are permitted, and separate Total Fire Ban restrictions may also apply.
