Forestry Corporation will stage a hazard reduction burn in Bermagui State Forest.

The burn near the intersection of Wallaga Lake Road and Cobargo-Bermagui Road will aim to reduce forest fuel loads.

The 400-hectare burn is expected to start next week, weather dependent.

Fire and Operations Team Leader for Batemans Bay Andrew Condie said the hazard reduction burn aims to improve bushfire protection for the township of Bermagui.

“This burn is being run in conjunction with a hazard reduction we did last year to safeguard the Bermagui township, which was impacted by the Coolagolite fire in 2023 and the Black Summer Bushfires in 2020,” Mr Condie said.

“We are capitalising on a favourable weather window having monitored moisture levels in the forest for several weeks now.

“There may be the possibility of smoke affecting traffic on the Wallaga Lake Road and Cobargo- Bermagui Road over the next week, so we will have traffic management in place along with road signage,” he said.
