An operation to remove hazardous trees has led to temporary road closures in Bago State Forest, near Tumbarumba.
A significant portion of Back Creek Road in Bago State Forest will be temporarily closed for approximately three-months.
The site will be inaccessible to the public for safety reasons with road closure signs now in place.
Forestry Corporation’s Area Manager for Tumbarumba Wendy Sheather said the program is removing trees that died as a result of the Black Summer bushfires in 2019-2020 and now pose a public safety risk.
“A contractor has so far removed a significant number of dangerous trees from the boundary we share with the softwood plantation, whilst maintaining the stands of new growth,” Mrs Sheather said.
“This program will open up the road and create a much safer path for forest access and for firefighting activities within Bago State Forest.
“Forestry Corporation is undertaking these works in winter to ensure public safety in Bago State Forest when visitor numbers to the forest increase during the warmer months,” she said.
Visitors and residents looking to access Paddy’s River Dam or Paling Yards campgrounds can do so via Bago Forest Way.
Signage is in place from the Kopsen’s Road and Batlow Road intersection.
Phase two of the program will address dangerous trees on state forest roads near Paddy’s River Dam and Pilot Hill Arboretum.
