Turning rubbish into Christmas smiles: Forestry’s donation to families in need
Forestry Corporation of NSW has turned a forest dumping problem into Christmas day smiles for Orange kids in need.
Forestry Corporation staff from the Canobolas Depot organised for 12 tonnes of stolen and burnt out cars found in local State forests to be sold for scrap and the proceeds donated to the Orange Ronald McDonalds House.
The seasonal crew came up with the idea last year as a way of dealing with a local problem and supporting families in need, said Senior Forest Supervisor, Michael Gafa.
“We’ve been relocating stolen and burnt our cars found in State forests to a central location for salvage steel collection,” Mr Gafa said.
“The proceeds from the salvaged steel have been used to purchase around $400 of presents for the kids attending Ronald McDonald House in Orange.
“We’ve been donating gifts for a couple of years now and knowing that kids in need are waking up on Christmas day with presents to unwrap and a big smile is really exciting.
“While it’s disappointing that stolen cars continue to turn up in State forest, we’re pleased to be able to use this issue to support local families in need.”
