Visitors warned of major damage to Pilliga State Forest road network
Forestry Corporation of NSW is advising that large numbers of roads in the Pilliga Forest and surrounding island forests have incurred significant damage following exceptional rain over the last few months.
The damage is a potential safety risk and visitors should avoid damaged areas, said Forestry Corporation’s Northern Cypress District manager, Conan Rossler.
“We have had well above average rainfall in the last few months due to the La Nina event – unfortunately there has been significant damage to the road network throughout the Pilliga and some surrounding island forests,” Mr Rossler said.
“Road surfaces have been significantly damaged and many creek crossings have become untrafficable and hazardous.”
“Those planning on visiting the Pilliga and using Forestry Corporation roads should avoid the area if possible until the area dries out and repairs can be carried out.”
Unless in a case of absolute emergency, Forestry Corporation staff will not be able to assist people stuck on roads or caught in flooding creeks due to the inaccessible and dangerous nature of the forest at the moment.
“Forestry Corporation staff have been assessing the damage where able to and putting up appropriate signage,” Mr Rossler said.
“However, significant parts of the forest remain inaccessible and thus cannot be assessed for safety hazards.
“Given that the La Nina event is expected to extend into January and February next year, we anticipate we are very unlikely to be able to progress significant repair work in the short-term.”
The high water table means any new rainfall will result in a mass movement of water, causing further damage to the road network.
Forestry Corporation will continue to keep the public informed and will advise once all roads have been assessed and restored to a trafficable and safe condition.
