Forestry Corporation of NSW and the NSW Police Port Stephens Hunter Police District have thanked visitors to Chichester State Forest’s Allyn River for their positive behaviour over the Australia Day period.

Beautiful weather and lush natural swimming holes saw families and groups of friends flock to the popular spot over the four-day period.

Forestry and Police worked together to maintain a presence throughout the break. NSW Police officers were present on trail bikes, 4WDs and patrol vehicles to make sure visitors were safe and well behaved, while Forestry staff also performed regular patrols, said Partnerships Leader Michael Hill.

“With hot weather over the period, we were expecting high visitor numbers at the Allyn River swimming holes, so we worked together to give visitors a safe and enjoyable experience,” Mr Hill said.

“Police carried out 190 random breath tests, with a provisional licence holder charged with prescribed content of alcohol, whilst three Vehicle Defects and five traffic-related infringement notices were issued to motorists.

“Forestry Corporation has been running regular campaigns to keep these free visitor areas safe and attractive for families and friends over the past few years, and we are pleased to see positive outcomes continue into 2021.”

A number of people who arrived late and camped in non-authorised areas were moved on by Forestry Corporation staff and NSW Police officers.

“We remind visitors to Chichester State Forest to camp only in designated camping areas — do not camp in picnic areas or along road verges or you will be moved on,” Mr Hill said.

“Please keep campsites clean at all times and respect these beautiful natural areas. That includes being mindful of other visitors, road users and neighbours.

“Please slow down on rural roads and keep dust down when passing neighbours properties.

“Whilst dogs are welcome, they must also be under control at all times.

“Remember also to stay COVID-safe and register your visit via our camper self-notification form available on our website, or via the QR code displayed in visitor areas.”
