Geotechnical assessment sets path forward for Barrington Tops Road repair
Forestry Corporation has started a geotechnical assessment of the Barrington Tops Road, following major structural damage sustained during severe wet weather earlier this year.
The road has been closed due to the high risk of collapse, and the assessment is an important step in repairing the damage, said Protection Supervisor Mick Wilson
“This geotechnical expedition is vital to understanding what is happening underground and map out the work ahead to repair the road foundation,” Mr Wilson said.
“Much like a scan before an operation, this assessment will tell us where the road is unstable and what needs to be done to repair it.
“Specialist contractors are taking soil samples and will give guidance on how much road material needs to be removed and replaced.
“Preliminary assessment has shown basically the whole road is fundamentally unsound, and this current work will give us a blueprint to move forward.”
Once the assessment is complete, Forestry Corporation will understand the scale of the work to be done, and be able to cost and plan the work ahead.
“The road is like Swiss cheese, so we need this information to repair all sink holes and make the road safe for people to drive on.
“While there is still much to be done, we’re pleased to be making progress and getting closer to reopening the road.
“We understand the importance of this road to the local community and visitors but we cannot stress enough how unsafe it is.”
Please adhere to all road closures, signs and barriers and avoid the area until repairs are complete.
Road closures are listed on the Forestry Corporation website as well as Live Traffic NSW and on signs in the forest.
