Hazard reduction burning in State forests of the Mid North Coast
Forestry Corporation of NSW will commence its program of hazard reduction burns on the NSW mid north coast this week.
A 350ha burn commenced in Bellangry State forest over the weekend and another will commence on Tuesday in Ballengarra State Forest.
Mick Wilson, Protection Forester for Mid North Coast said, these forests weren’t impacted by fire over the summer season and mild and controlled hazard reduction burning is important to reduce the fuel and help protect the surrounding communities of Bellangry, Rolland’s Plains and Smiths Creek.
“Part of the burn program also takes in recently harvested timber plantations and will aid in the re-establishment of these plantations where we will re-plant seedlings to grow for timber supply in the future,” Mr Wilson said.
Hazard reduction burns will be carefully monitored to ensure they stay within cleared containment lines.
The Ballengarra burn will be visible from the Pacific Highway, north of Telegraph Point.
“We ask everyone to stay away from any burning or recently burnt areas as these are unsafe and motorists should also take care when driving in smoky conditions.
Forestry Corporation analyses smoke patterns in collaboration with the Rural Fire Service and NSW Health.
“The weather this week and lighting patterns will help reduce the effect of smoke on the community.
The hazard reduction burns will all be visible on the “Fires Near Me” app as planned events.
