Cumberland forest fair offers families fun and adventure
Forestry Corporation of NSW is inviting families to Australia’s only metropolitan State forest on Sunday 28 October for fun and adventure.
Cumberland State forest will again host the Cumberland forest fair, with around 4,000 people expected to visit the 40 ha West Pennant Hills site and experience the best of what forests can offer.
Forestry Corporation’s Cumberland Site Manager, Tim Liston, said the event continues to offer visitors a taste of ‘all things forestry’, from animals and timber, to recreational activities taking place in State forests.
“Wood, of course, will be feature heavily, with the ever-popular wood chopping demonstration on show,” Mr Liston said.
“In other areas of the forest, timber will be turned, chiselled and sanded by woodworking groups, showcasing their skills in creating fine timber products.
“Visitors will also have the chance to experience the forest’s towering eucalypts and find out more about the onsite facilities available to the public.”
Forestry Corporation’s Visitor Centre will also explain sustainable forestry, the plantation timber journey and carbon storage in forests and timber products.
Mr Liston said there will be lots of free activities for children.
“Children will have the chance to paint and decorate timber magnets, cardboard animals or even create their very own bark art masterpiece, along with decorating mini cardboard houses,” he said.
“Families can also enjoy the sensory trail bush walk and use the forest treasure map to find such gems as rough bark from a blackbutt, gum nuts and spider web.
“Visitors also have the opportunity to get a taste of the variety of recreational activities that take place in State forests including driving a mini 4x4 jeep, rally slot car driving and visiting the Range Rover Club camping display amongst other attractions.”
People will also be able to handle furry and scaly native animals at exhibits by the Australian Walkabout Wildlife Park and Sydney Wildlife Rescue.
Other exhibitors on the day will include the Rural Fire Service; SES; and community groups such as the Cumberland Bird Observers Club and Cumberland Bushcare Volunteers.
