Hazard reduction burning

We use hazard reduction burning to reduce forest fuels such as sticks, leaf litter, grass and dead wood on the ground. Reducing fuel levels means any future bushfire will usually be less intense, cause less damage and will be more easily controlled. The video below explains more.

We identify hazard reduction priorities in collaboration with the NSW Rural Fire Service and local Bush Fire Management Committees.

There is a narrow window of opportunity each year for safe hazard reduction burning and we balance the fire mitigation benefits with the potential impacts of smoke on the community.

Cultural burning

We work with Aboriginal communities to carry out low-intensity burns using traditional methods, to bring traditional fire practices back into forests, keep culture alive, reduce fire risk and improve forest health.

Grazing

We allow grazing in suitable locations. Grazing provides opportunities for farmers to access land and reduces the fire risk from weeds and grasses. Grazing Management Plans manage the potential environmental impacts. Find out about applying for a grazing permit.

Post-harvest burning

During harvesting operations, each tree can produce a range of renewable timber and wood products. Some parts of the tree are not sold commercially Residue is also made available to the community for firewood. Apply for a firewood permit.

We also carry out post-harvest burns to reduce fire risk from residue and create a rich seed bed for regeneration or replanting. Post-harvest burning is planned and conducted outside fire season when it is safe to burn.
