Wild rabbit

Code name

'The Tunneller'

Status

Builder of underground highways.

Numbers

Estimated at 200 million.

Distribution

Most habitats on the Australian continent.

Original purpose

Wild rabbits were introduced for hunting, as a sport, in Victoria in 1859. Skins were used to make felt hats.

Capabilities

Reproduces rapidly which leads to overpopulation. Eats almost any plant including the roots, which leaves large areas without vegetation. Digs underground tunnel networks.

Problem

Eats the food supplies of native animals. Leaves large areas without vegetation to hold the soil together. Burrowing breaks roots and creates serious soil erosion.

Control

People must act responsibly:

  • have pets desexed
  • do not dump unwanted pets.

Introduction of diseases such as myxomatosis and the calici virus are being used as a biological control. Poisoning, rabbit warren destruction, trapping and shooting, with some success.
