Distribution
Most habitats on the Australian continent. Concentrated around cities and towns where unwanted animals have been dumped.
Original purpose
Domestic pets and ship's cats of both European and Asian origin.
Capabilities
Skilled hunter in trees and on ground, with no native predator. Can hunt in day and night.
Problem
Kills native fauna. Diet includes; small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects.
Control
People must act responsibly and:
- have pets desexed
- keep pets in at night
- do not dump unwanted pets.
There are poisoning, trapping and shooting programs in place, with some success.
